So, you've decided to become a mythical. Great! Glad to have you. But what to become? This decision involves three factors: Preference, limitations, and potential. Here you will learn how to seek out the best form for you.
The biggest reason to become a mythical is wanting to be a certain type of nonhuman, so we will start with preference.
Which would you rather be? A mermaid or a werewolf? Consider all of the mythical types and rank them. For example, if you love tigers and don't really like the idea of being a swift, powerful tiger neko, you rank tiger shifter (werecat) above it. Then, if mermaids appeal more than nekos but less than werecats, put them in the middle. Rank your list this way until you have one at the top, using everything you can think of to rank the list. Now it is time to shuffle and remove with the next two steps.
Limitations are what may keep you from being a mythical. Example: you live in Arizona and can't become a mer because of it, or your city has very few parks which may limit you to kemonos and possibly avians. Some common limitations are: (and the mythicals which it limits)
Dry location: Mer
No nature: Weres, some avians, mers, fairies, wilder kemonos
Overly watchful parents: Weres (younger only), avians or kemonos with non retractable parts, most mythicals
No solitude/overly populated: Weres, avians
Full schedule: Moon-shifting weres, anything affected by moon phases, some avians
No mythical/mythical-accepting friends: Some vampires/demons, most mythicals (but very minor unless you need human blood)
School (esp. with uniforms or hat ban): Some avians/kemonos with non retractable parts, mers (if there's a pool), weres, most mythicals are very pressured in school
Figure out any limitations you may have and remove mythicals that you absolutely can't be. When you've eliminated the impossible options, time to grade potential.
Potential is the more practical, the opposite of limitations. Sure, you may think mers are cool, but you'd be better off a neko as you want to have some fighting powers. Most mers do not possess powers beyond water breathing, but they are usually slightly stronger than a human. Some people may prefer werebears over werewolves for pure power, while some may prefer wolves for mobility. Think about these things:
Water, air, or forest? Possibly multiple?
Is strength and battle prowess important to your future life? Fight or flight?
Do you want physical parts on a human form, or a switch to a non-humanoid creature?
Real animal basis, or mythical? (e.g. werewolf or dragon shifter?)
Do you want to have parts that could show all the time, or retractable?
Come up with any other things, such as powers you might want, and match them to mythical types. Then rearrange the list. Maybe a wolf shifter may be a better fit for you than the neko you were initially attracted to.
I chose my form because I wanted to be a wolf shifter and an avian, so I decided to choose both options and an in between winged wolf form. Be creative! Now, onto shifting methods.
Spells are often the first method, but it requires a lot of belief and focus, and you may have to try several spells or make them if your type is rare. Doubt will lengthen the spell and kill it, so be very careful. Use affirmations or small amounts of m-shifting to aid the spell.
Metaphysical shifting is riskier but always works. You are changing your mind permanently, and there is a point of no return for very nonhuman beings where they cannot shift back. Avians or winged demons/half demons have no chance of retractable wings if using this method, as the being has to be mostly human sized or it will be permanent. This also means dragon shifters must use spells or small dragon breeds.
There are other methods such as meditation, which is like metaphysical shifting except with no permanent mental change (usually) and therefore a lower chance of a PNR, but with the same rules for being the same mass, and it is a lot more tedious a process to get to shifting level and even just to shift.
There could also possibly be a process similar to metaphysical shifting without the permanent mental shift, PNR or mass rules. I may work to find an in between method with effects similar to a good spell with 100 percent faith in it... e.g. you can shift and shift back in seconds if you want that, the shift is mostly painless, there is not much of a permanent mental imprint, and there is no point of no return, and you can become any size being and shift back (only one form though unless you're working on multiple forms at once). If any of you have any ideas on developing this method, perhaps we can do it together. I will probably call it something like "energy shifting", "connection shifting" or maybe "pure physical shifting", "aura shifting"... I'll make a comment of name ideas, and I'll pick one once the steps are more developed. (It has to use some special stuff as metaphysical shifting still sort of borders the laws of physics... we need to break those laws with just our mind in order to convert large amounts of mass with no ill effect, keep our minds in check while also attuning to another entire species, and actually shift with no pain.)
